An exciting career awaits you as an airline pilot. Enjoy a great opportunity to train in Canada, a world leader in aviation.
Toronto Airways is located in Toronto, Canada. We have been in the Flight Training business for over 45 years. We operate under Transport Canada Operating Certificate #8518.
We specialize in airline pilot training for students from India. You obtain the highly respected Canadian Commercial Pilot Licence, and can then convert that to an Indian Commercial Licence when you return home. We can provide you with a special ground school to prepare you for the written Indian exams.
You train in the type of aircraft recognized by the DGCA - C-172 or C-152 so there is no difficultyconverting your licence when you return home.
You also have the choice of flying either at Toronto Airways in Markham (a suburb of Toronto), or at our sister school, Canadian Flight Academy, located in Oshawa. Oshawa is a smaller city located about 30 miles east of Markham.
We understand that arriving in a strange country can be difficult, so we will meet you at the airport and help you get settled when you arrive.
There are many Indian pilots who hold only a commercial pilot licence and find it difficult to get employment in current conditions. While these will no doubt improve, we recommend that you should try to increase your qualifications to be more competitive when you return home. To help you be more competitive we offer a Jet Transition Course and can even arrange Type Rating Training if you wish. Another route is to obtain a Flight Instructor Rating and teach in Canada before returning to India.

The path to a Commercial Pilot Licence
Medical requirements
The issue of a Commercial Pilot Licence is dependant on the candidate passing a Class One Aviation Medical. This medical includes a general physical examination, plus eyesight and hearing tests.
Because an entire career depends on passing this medical, it is generally wise to undertake the examination prior to commencing training. When you email us, ask for a list of doctors in your area who can conduct Canadian medicals.
The training for a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) follows a similar path, regardless of whether the training is conducted full time or part time.
The first stage is to obtain a Private Pilot Licence. This licence allows pilots to carry passengers with them, but not for hire or reward - Private Pilots cannot be paid for their flying.
The Private Licence will generally be achieved with around 60 to 65 hours of flight time, and also involves three written examinations. A flight test is conducted prior to the issue of the licence.
After a Private Pilot Licence, trainees need to build their experience while developing their skills to the level required for the issue of a Commercial Pilot Licence. The Commercial Licence is issued after the candidate has achieved 200 hours flying experience, passed a written examination and a flight test.
The night rating is included as part of the Commercial Licence. Candidates who are not planning to complete the Commercial Licence can obtain a Night Rating separately if desired.
At this point candidates are qualified to be paid for their flying. However Commercial Pilots who do not also hold an Instrument Rating can only fly in reasonably fair "VFR" (Visual Flight Rules) weather. Candidates who have not completed a multi-engine rating are limited to flying single engine airplanes.
These limitations are significant for a CPL holder, so most CPL trainees will undertake training for a Multi Rating and an Instrument Rating. These ratings allow them to fly more sophisticated aircraft in poorer weather.
Training for the Multi Rating and the Instrument Rating can be partially combined with training for the Commercial Licence.
After completion of this additional training the new Commercial Pilot is in a much more employable situation, and is able to pursue jobs in air charter and air freight operations.
The CPL holder can also train to become a Flying Instructor - probably the best way to obtain that first job in the aviation industry. Training to be an Instructor also increases flying skills, as an Instructor must be able to demonstrate all flying manoeuvres to a high standard.
What do the airlines require?
The following is provided as a guide.
- Minimum age 18 years.
- 10 + 2 with Physics and Math
- Commercial Pilot Licence.
- Multi Engine endorsement.
- Multi Engine Command Instrument Rating.
- Experience requirements vary by airline
Important considerations
The way you undertake training for a Commercial Pilot Licence has a huge bearing on what your career prospects are in the long term. Unfortunately, many people make the wrong decisions at the beginning of their training and the result is a lost opportunity for an aviation career.
There are some fundamental considerations that need to be of primary concern when making your decision:
Age: The airlines will generally be looking at taking on flight crew at the earliest possible age, generally 18 years. The reason for this is that there are significant costs incurred by the airlines in training you, so they need the longest return of service that you can give them prior to retiring. This allows them to recover the training costs they have invested in you. For this reason you should avoid any delays in getting to a position where you can be applying for a flight crew position.
Experience: The most important factor considered when someone applies for a job with an airline is his or her flying experience. It is the one qualification that all aviation jobs are centered around, and it is therefore the most important qualification you need to obtain.
It is crucial that you obtain your Commercial Pilot Licence and other qualifications without much delay, and then start working in the industry to build up your experience.
Qualifications: The main qualification for employment as a pilot is the Commercial Pilot Licence.
Summary
From the above, it can be seen that the preferred path to follow for a career Professional Pilot is one that has the following characteristics:
- Diploma qualification if possible, or professional course of study.
- Study period is no more than 12 to 15 months to be qualified and employable, unless an Instructor Rating is involved.
- Involves a wide range of experiences for the trainee, including multi engine simulator training, and high performance aircraft training.
- Provides a clear path into employment in General Aviation to build up flying experience. Typically in Canada this means a Flight Instructor Rating. For your convenience, details on obtaining an Instructor Rating are included here.
Instructor Rating
This rating allows you to teach others to fly. For many aspiring airline pilots it is their first job as a commercial pilot. Each flight instructing hour counts as Pilot in Command time. With diligent study you can complete this rating in about 3 months.

General
All training provided by Toronto Airways is of the highest quality, and the formal structure of our courses provides a learning process with precisely defined goals throughout.
A candidate is trained with a small group of other students at the same level of experience and at the same time will interact with students at varying levels in other courses. This provides a wealth of information and provides a more stimulating learning environment.
Toronto Airways maintains a real emphasis on the quality of training and personal attention. At Toronto Airways the Chief Flying Instructor is continually in contact with all instructors, and closely monitors the progress of students, as well as the standards being achieved.
While the learning environment at Toronto Airways promotes the highest standards of professionalism, it is also an enjoyable place to study. Class sizes are kept small, with each student receiving personal tuition. Interaction with other Toronto Airways students is a vital part of the learning process for a professional pilot who will have to deal with many different people as their passengers. Toronto Airways has a reputation for quality training, while retaining a pleasant atmosphere that is also enjoyed by our full-time students. All students are welcome to join the Buttonville Flying Club, which organizes fly away trips, competition days and other social events for licensed and student pilots.
