The job prospects for Professional Pilots
Employment prospects for professional pilots are as high as they have been in over 20 years. The boomer airline pilots are retiring, and you can be filling their jobs. The world is experiencing a massive upswing in building of aviation infrastructure. China and India are building airports and starting up airlines at a pace that is creating a pilot shortage. Flight schools in Canada are being bombarded with requests to train overseas commercial pilots for the many jobs that are opening up in international aviation.
Now is the time to start your training and get yourself into an entry level commercial pilot job. You will need to work for several years at entry level and intermediate jobs to prepare yourself to apply for an airline job. If you start now, you can be part of the massive airline hiring surge that is just beginning.
Don't miss the boat!
But airline is not the only career choice. There are also many different kinds of jobs you can work at as a professional pilot.
Choices include corporate charter, executive charter, flight instructing, and bush flying.
Your first step in deciding on your training is to get more information about the life of a professional pilot, and how to get trained.
To get information on the life of a commercial pilot, download your copy of this informative brochure called Careers in Canada Brochure . It explains the job choices, how you train for your choice, what it is like to work in these pilot jobs, and what kind of income you can expect.
Continue reading through this section of our website to see the various training programs and get an idea of which ones appeal to your budget and schedule.
No matter what program you choose, you will be trained to the same flying standard. The major difference between the programs is the number of enriched academic courses you choose to supplement your flying qualifications. Aviation employers are looking more and more for advanced education and enriched aviation courses. You should get as much aviation education as your budget and schedule permits.
Admission Requirements
Requirements will vary depending on the program you choose. At a minimum they will include:
- Ontario high school graduation or equivalent, or mature student status (19 or older)
- Class I Aviation Medical Certificate
- Ability to pass an airport screening and security check
Accommodation
Convenient accommodation is available in Toronto Airways' new student housing facility. Prices for rooms start at $350.00 double and $600.00 single.
Accommodation price includes shared kitchen, bath, living room and laundry facilities
The student house is just steps from the airport so no car is necessary. Public transit is at the door and local shopping is just across the street. A large shopping mall is 5 minutes away by direct bus.
Spaces are limited and are on a first-come first-serve basis. If you are interested please contact John Davis.
Costs and Financial Assistance
The cost will vary depending on the courses you select, the aircraft you select, and the way you proceed through them. Regardless of which program you choose, you will definitely need to complete a Private Pilot and a Commercial Pilot licence. These are the bare essentials that everyone needs to obtain.
You will be investing about $35,000.00 to complete these two programs, and then you will be adding the cost of the advanced training you need for your career choice.
Financial assistance is available through the major banks in the form of a Student Line of Credit. You will need to qualify, and for many of our students that means getting a parent or other person to co-sign the application
Go to the bank websites and enter 'Student Line of Credit' in their search box. (Be sure to include the word 'student'.) Then research their individual programs to see which one is the best fit for you.
A line of credit means that you only pay interest on the amount you have actually spent. If you take a loan, you will pay interest on the entire amount you borrow, even if you don't use some of it for months.
For more detailed information on costs, go to the individual program descriptions.
